Sao Paulo Central Municipal Market - Mercado Municipal de São Paulo

Today I will walk on my favorite topic - markets. But I will show not just the market, but the most famous and most attractive market for tourists in Sao Paulo - the central market.

So, a few reasons to visit the central market of Sao Paulo:

Architecture

This huge building in an eclectic style is simply impossible not to notice - it is majestic and fascinating with details.

In the architectural details of the building you can find many elements of the neoclassical style, art deco style and even interspersed with Gothic. Notable objects of decor are castle stones - each arch is crowned with the mask of the goddess Ceres, coffee branches and fruits. The central part of the building is marked by four turrets with domes. All turrets also have arches on the facade, which are closed with the coat of arms of São Paulo.

Market construction took place over five years from 1928 to 1933. The official opening took place on January 25, 1933.
The building was designed very rationally. The huge interior space consists of many spans with arches resting on carved columns of the Ionian and Corinthian orders. Natural lighting is provided by extensive light windows in the arches and picturesque stained-glass windows in the arches on the facade. Picturesque stained glass windows, by the way, is the next reason.

Impressive Stained Glass

All the spans in the market building are marked with arches with huge Gothic stained glass windows. In total there are 55 stained-glass windows depicting scenes of growing and food production. The authorship belongs to Brazilian renowned stained glass artist of German descent Conrad Sorgenicht son (Conrado Sorgenicht Filho).

Purchases

A variety of purchases is the next reason. And yes, do not be surprised, for me this is far from the primary reason for visiting the market, but the reason is important :)

It may not be the cheapest prices here, but the central market is hundreds of tents with everything you want! Meat, fish, cereals, cheeses and olives, wines and other drinks, spices, vegetables and exotic fruits are a delight of plenty. By the way, fruit is the next reason.

Exotic fruits

Perhaps it is difficult to find another such place in Sao Paulo, where you can see such a crazy variety of exotic fruits from different parts of the globe. In addition, not just to see, but also to try. Moreover! You will have to try many fruits! Because how to pass by compassionate sellers, so that you are not treated to something, it is categorically impossible. As soon as you gape at the counter, looking at some exotic fruit, the seller is already cutting fruits and, praising, shoves into your hands. Refuse will not work at all! After all, everything ends with a reproachful look and the phrase: "Do you want to offend me?" Even if before that you were generously stuffed at a nearby counter, the phrase "No, thanks!" Doesn’t work with any sauce.

This can go on indefinitely:

- Thank you, I have already been treated!

“But I haven’t treated you yet, you certainly haven’t tried this.”

- Dont need it, thanks.

- You do not want to offend me?

And after two meters everything repeats in a new way ...

Mortadella Sandwich is the next reason

As you know, most Brazilians go to the market not only for shopping, but also for a snack. The central market of São Paulo is not at all an exception in this regard. There is a huge number of eateries that can offer a wide range of different dishes. But the most famous dish of the central market is the Mortadella sandwich.

What kind of miracle is this?

The idea of a sandwich was born in the 30s. after the opening of the market. Italian immigrants brought the tradition of sausage sandwiches to Brazil, and at first local sandwiches with mortadella sausages (boiled sausage) were served in local eateries. It was a piece of sausage on a white French bun - nothing special. But picky customers have influenced the course of history. People complained that the sandwich is so thin that the filling is almost not felt. Therefore, the owner of one diner decided to make a giant filling and stop all these conversations at once. The idea not only worked, it grew into insanity! Client popper. Everyone asked for a mortadella super sandwich. Mortadella Sandwich instantly became a local attraction.

Today it is served in many eateries on the municipal market. Just imagine, for each sandwich 300 g of sausage is used! And this is not counting the additional ingredients, which may be cheese, bacon or onions. By the way, there may not be a place in many eateries. Therefore, you may have to wait a short queue to taste the curiosity.

Salty Portuguese cod for 72.90 !!! (1500 rub)

In general, in Brazil there is a certain maneuver for this salty cod. Why such a popular love is justified, I can’t explain in any way. It does not stop that cod here is more expensive than the rest of the fish - everyone loves it without exception. Moreover, salted cod is far from a finished product! Before cooking, it must be soaked and boiled, and then the main process begins. Cod is a huge Brazilian mystery to me.
