Wave-like buildings to walk along in Tokyo

The British architectural studio Heatherwick Studio continues to push the boundaries of what is possible as part of its first project in Japan. For the reconstruction of the Tokyo region of Toranomon-Azabudai, the company employees designed a complex of buildings, the architecture of which is designed to combine functions and forms. Studio founder Thomas Heatherwick compares the new creation of his studio with garden pergolas. The buildings invented by Heatherwick Studio for Tokyo will be distinguished by soft wavy lines and an abundance of plants, which should noticeably green the landscape of the metropolis. Some buildings will be equipped with external stairs, allowing pedestrians to walk straight home.

Due to the irregularly shaped landscapes difficult to build, the developers decided to design a low-level architecture. In addition to buildings, they thought out landscaping that will surround them, areas for retail and recreation.

The project is based on a 13-story building, lined with glass, which allows light to penetrate the underground shopping arcade. The roof is tilted and reaches ground level. Its surface will be dotted with terraces, which offer beautiful views of the surrounding vegetation. In a city filled with skyscrapers, this architecture looks rather unusual and invites people to interact with buildings, literally climbing them.

The construction of the project has already begun, and the company plans to complete the work in the spring of 2023.
