Why do Iranian women wear mustache masks

Burka, ruband, nekab-e - for a traditional female mask in the shape of a mustache, which is tied at the back of the head, there are various names in Iran. Such an unusual wardrobe item appeared a very long time ago, but is still used by local women as a tribute to tradition and a sign of decency. In addition, in the southernmost regions, the mask helps protect against the hot sun and wind blown into the sand.

Girls can wear some from the age of nine. Parents make the first mask to order. The simplest one will cost only a few dollars, but richer families prefer to choose fabrics more expensive, do embroidery or decorate with rhinestones and swarovski crystals.

In general, "mustachioed" masks not only emphasize individuality, but you can say a lot about them from its owner. So, depending on what color and what material the rubands are on the face of a Muslim woman, knowledgeable people can make a conclusion about her age, family and social status, and even the place where she comes from.
