One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe

The fact that the Balkans are one of the most beautiful places in Europe, I understood for a long time. And this beauty is so rich that every time you come back here you can discover something new, impressive, just beautiful. Even during yacht regattas, when there is practically no time for the “shore”.

I rarely say the phrase "You must visit here" and "I recommend it." But today I’ll say this phrase. If you are going to Croatia, be sure to get to the town of Skradin, from where you can take a bike or boat trip to the Krka National Park, where some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe are located ...

Of all the protected and park areas of Croatia, the Krka National Park is considered one of the most beautiful. The territory of this park is located between the cities of Sibenik and Knin in Central Dalmatia.

Krka Park is located along the eponymous river, whose length is 72 km. The mouth of the Krka River 23/5 km long is recognized as an exceptional natural phenomenon. It mixes fresh water with sea water, and therefore both river and sea fish live here, as well as mollusks - mussels and oysters.

The Krka Park gained the greatest fame thanks to its waterfalls. There are seven in total and their total length is 400 meters. In addition, 17 main cascades can be distinguished, the total difference in height between the first and last is 47.7 meters. The total fall of all cascades reaches 242 meters.

The main waterfall of the cascade is Roški Slap, which consists of a huge number of smaller waterfalls, 450 meters wide and 650 meters long. This is the lowest waterfall from the whole cascade, and it is from here that the pedestrian climb to the top of the cascade begins.

The noise of the water here is so strong that in some places near the waterfall it’s even impossible to talk.

It is amazing how shrubs and trees manage to withstand a powerful continuous flow of water.

Some of them even manage to grow and develop in the “heat”:

The most beautiful and famous of all Krka waterfalls is Skradinsky Buk. The flow of Skradinsky Beech is 43 cubic meters per second, in winter - about 18 cubic meters, and in the summer it reaches 55 cubic meters per second. Krka Waterfalls is the largest cascading system in Europe.

Skradinsky Buk waterfall is formed due to the merging of the waters of the Krka and Chikola rivers.

Among Krka’s waterfalls, on the left bank of the river, one can see a sight unusual for the eyes of a modern person - real operating mills, in which grain is crushed into flour by millstones driven by water, like centuries ago.

There are several mills, they are also arranged in different ways - somewhere there is one millstone, and somewhere there is a whole small mill workshop.

At different times of the year, the water level in the waterfalls changes, and sometimes some mills are partially flooded. In this small mill you can even notice a small waterfall from the window to the street).

Today, on the left bank of the cascade, where there have been mills for many centuries, there is an ethnic village, where the preserved houses show the life of peasants who lived here hundreds of years ago.

There are no streets here, only narrow shady walkways leading into the mill, into a residential building, ethnic restaurant or souvenir shop.

Forge in the ethnic village:

Above the ethno-village, where the Krka and Chikola rivers merge, wooden bridges have been put in place to walk along, enjoying the incredible beauty of nature and listening to the sound of waterfalls.

Over the waterfalls the water is calm and quiet ...

But a few tens of meters, and the water breaks down to sweep across this incredible cascade. It is at this point that everything begins.

Here is the whole list of Krka waterfalls:

  • Bilušić Buk - 22 meters;
  • Brlyan (Brljan) - 15 meters;
  • Manojlovački slapovi (Manojlovački slapovi) - drop of 60 meters;
  • Rošnjak - 8 meters;
  • Miljačka Slap - 24 meters;
  • Roshki Slap - main waterfall - 22.5 meters;
  • Skradinski Buk - 46 meters.

By the way, separately it is necessary to say about water dust and spray. Even in calm weather, water dust scatters many tens of meters, so be careful with your technique.

The silent viewer ...

In the end I will briefly tell you how to get here. The first way is by bus on the route Šibenik - Lozovac (Lozovac is a stop at the entrance to the Krka park). The bus runs on the route 5 times a day, the fare is included in the price of the entrance ticket to the park.

The second way - a sightseeing boat, which follows from the town of Marina Skradin to the lower waterfall (the cost of the entrance ticket also includes the fare).

The third way is by renting a bike in Skradin (this is the way I got here). Drive about 40 minutes.
