The first system of dams and locks of the Nile River and the entire African continent

In Kunatyr, located 20 km north of Cairo, I got as a result of swimming on the municipal river tram, where the very first system of locks and dams, built in 1843-1862, is located. to control the water level in the Nile Delta. The fact is that the Nile constantly flooded the delta, which in turn is the breadbasket of Egypt. As the rainy season began in the upper reaches of the river in Ethiopia and Uganda, the water level rose sharply and it overflowed, flooding vast territories, because the Nile Delta is a lowland rarely exceeding a couple of meters above sea level. Qanatir barrages (Kunatyr dams) are also interesting for their architecture, and now let's get acquainted with an example of the creation of English engineering carried out in North Africa.

It should be noted that the commissioning of the High Aswan Dam, built with the assistance of the USSR in 1960-1971, made it possible to take control of the Nile floods throughout Egyptian territory. Since the 1970s Kunatyr dams ceased to play an important role, but part of the mechanism is still used in navigation along the Nile.

Many designs are more than 100 years old, which also function properly, if used.

I got back on a shuttle bus to Cairo.

Rural Egyptian pastoral.

Visit this place by sailing on a river boat on the Nile. I guarantee you will find out what non-tourist Egypt is. There is not a single foreigner, but the locals are very friendly. I was treated with tea and juices twice after seeing me as an Arabic-speaking foreigner =))
