Sea hares, cats, leopards and other underwater counterparts of land inhabitants

In the oceans there are many animals, in the name of which you can find the names of all familiar land animals with the prefix "marine". Today we will talk about the most interesting inhabitants of the deep sea, who got their names because of their similarity with various land animals.

Catfish

This fish from the family of stingrays stingrays stingrays lives in the warm coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean, washing Europe and the north of Africa. Stingrays are typical benthic inhabitants, therefore their upper and lower halves of the body are strikingly different.

Gurnard

Sea cocks, or triglova - a family of marine ray-finned fish, which includes more than 100 species. A characteristic feature of species of the family of sea cocks is the presence of bone or spiky plates on the surface of the body.

Sea urchin

These are one of the most ancient species of animals living in the deep sea. Most often, sea urchins have a spherical body, which in most species is covered with needles. Among the representatives of the class of sea urchins, there are poisonous species that are dangerous to humans.

Sea fox

Sea fox, or prickly slope, refers to the cartilaginous fish that inhabit the Mediterranean and Black Seas, as well as some regions of the northeast Atlantic.

Harbour porpoise

This is a family of marine mammals of the toothed whale suborder, which includes 6 species. Representatives of the family inhabit the coastal waters of the seas almost throughout the globe, and sometimes go into the lower reaches of the rivers. For example, a featherless porpoise.

Sea hare

The sea hare, or lahtak, belongs to the family of real seals. Despite the harmless name, the sea hare is a predatory mammal, the diet of which includes crabs, mollusks, fish and other near-bottom inhabitants of shallow water. The distribution range of the sea hare covers the northern latitudes of our planet: the Arctic Ocean, the northern seas of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Sea Elephant

The genus of elephant seals belongs to the family of true seals and includes two species: northern elephant seals and southern elephant seals. Males of both species have a proboscis nose, which is more pronounced in the southern species, and can reach a weight of 4 tons. Southern elephant seals live off the coast of Antarctica, and northern elephants off the western coast of North America.

Sea lion

Sea lions are a subfamily of eared seals, which includes 5 species that live in different parts of the globe. But the southern sea lion is the most similar to a land lion, the males of which have a mane of longer and lighter hair on the surface of the body.

Sea leopard

This marine leopard double was not named so by accident: it is distinguished by its spotted skin and unusually aggressive graying. Sea leopards living in Antarctic latitudes prey not only on small marine inhabitants, but also on their closest relatives - eared and real seals.
