Kayetur Waterfall: a little-known miracle of nature, hidden in the jungle of Guyana

Waterfalls Victoria, Angel, Iguazu, Niagara - all of them are familiar not only to travel lovers, but to most of the inhabitants of our planet. Their photographs adorn travel booklets and are the hallmark of the countries in which they are located. Meanwhile, on the Earth there are no less interesting waterfalls, which, due to their inaccessible location, remain little known. Today we will talk about the magnificent Kayetur waterfall.

Cayetur Falls is located in Guyana, in the north of South America, in the Guiana Highlands. This is a free fall waterfall, whose height is 226 meters, which is 2 times higher than the famous Victoria Falls in Africa. Kayetur has a width of about 100 meters, which varies slightly depending on the season.

Kayetur is located on the Potaro River, on which in addition to it there are 8 more waterfalls. The first among European researchers to discover this picturesque waterfall in the middle of the tropical jungle was the English scientist Charles Brown. Although, of course, this waterfall was known to the local Indian tribes long before the discovery of Brown in 1870. The indigenous peoples inhabiting the Guiana Highlands have a beautiful legend associated with this waterfall. According to legend, the Indian leader, whose name was Kaya, sailed along the Potaro River in a canoe and died in order to save his fellow tribesmen.

The falling stream of water creates waves in a small body of water where Cayetur flows. At the foot of the waterfall you can observe air vortices: it is always windy here, and the air is saturated with tiny droplets of water. Below this reservoir, the river overcomes another cliff 25 meters high, forming a cascade with a total height of more than 250 meters.

Despite the fact that there is a national park of the same name around the waterfall, visiting this place is fraught with a number of difficulties. These are underdeveloped regions of the rainforest, devoid of roads, energy supply and other signs of civilization. You can get to the Kayetur waterfall area by plane or by breaking tens of kilometers through the impenetrable jungle of the Guiana Highlands. The latter option is suitable only for physically prepared tourists who are able to overcome a difficult path in order to enjoy a magnificent sight. Well, someone who is not ready to spend two days surrounded by the wildlife world on the way to the waterfall can see this amazing place from the plane.
